Army veterans criticise PM Modi for “Cloud-Radar” remark

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attracted criticism for himself from opposition, social media and general people for his recent “cloud-radar” remark.

In an interview with News Nation on Saturday, PM Modi, while commenting on the airstrike conducted in February, said that despite bad weather, he gave a go ahead to fighter jets as he believed that clods and heavy rain would prevent radars from detecting jets.

“The weather was not good on the day of airstrikes. There was a thought that crept in the minds of the experts that day of strike should be changed. However, I suggested that the clouds could actually help our planes escape the radars,” PM Modi said.

Now, army veterans have criticised the PM’s illogical remarks.

Major Priyadarshi Chowdhury who was part of the Sikh regiment and the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) wrote in a tweet, “Unlike Civil Aviation radars, the Armed Forces operate a suite of radars primarily based on the S-band (though the suite pretty much encompasses other bands too). This suite makes the [PM’s] claim redundant in modern warfare. There is no point in trying to defend the indefensible.”

Chowdhury was reacting to BJP leader Jay Panda’s tweet supporting the PM’s comment.

The managing director of the Chamber of Commerce of Ex-Servicemen and the editor of Fauji Reporter, Retired Colonel Ashok Kumar Singh, questioned as to why the PM is in charge of air operations instead of experts.

“Well i really don’t understand…. Why shall PM control Air Operations? Does he have any knowledge of Air War or Air Tactics and Air Technology? Its job of experts… @PMOIndia shall only give policy directions? What is wrong @IAF_MCC with you?” he tweeted.

Commenting on Singh’s tweet, Brigadier MPS Bajwa (retired) said, “I agree Col Ashok .. it’s strange as to why PM should interfere in military matters? He has no business to interfere in Air Operations.”

Bajwa commanded the brigade that captured Tiger Hill during the Kargil war and fought in the 1971 Bangladesh war.

Major General SG Vombatkere, VSM, who retired as Additional DG Discipline & Vigilance in Army HQ AG’s Branch, took a jibe at PM Modi for his remark.
