BJP got Rs 743 cr in donations in 2018-19, top donor is Tata-controlled Progressive Electoral Trust

In the financial year 2018-19, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received Rs 743 crore in donations above Rs 20,000. The declaration was made by the saffron party to the Election Commission of India (ECI) on October 31 which was made public on Monday.

The amount received by the BJP in the form of donations is much more than what other national parties received, and the highest that the BJP has ever received as donations.

Under the political funding laws in India, it is mandatory for political parties to disclose their donations received in excess of Rs. 20,000. The Congress received Rs 147 crore in donations above Rs 20,000, which is just a fifth of what the BJP received.

The amount in the form of donations has always been high for the BJP. The saffron party received Rs. 437 crore in donations above Rs. 20,000 in 2017-18 and Rs. 532.27 crore in 2016-17.

Around half of the total donation received by the BJP was contributed by an electoral trust controlled by the Tata Group. Rs 356 crore were made by the Tata-controlled Progressive Electoral Trust.
